In order to understand how essential security software works, it is important to have a basic understanding of some terms like firewall, virus, Trojan, worm, spyware, malware, keylogger, pop-up, and cookie. Definition of these important terms will be discussed as follows:

Pop-ups - a new browser window that appears on a computer screen even if unrequested 9. Cookie - small text files that are placed by web sites for a computer browser to remember specific information including passwords and user identification Essential security software is needed to prevent infection of a personal computer. A Firewall works by configuring it to allow or restrict access to and from a personal computer. It also informs a user if there are other users in a local network that seeks to access particular computer information. Scanners are applications that allow files in the computer hard disk to be scanned including received emails or files that may have infections like viruses, Trojans, and spyware. Cookie handlers or blockers are another form of essential security software. This allows the user to control the type of cookies that will be saved in the hard disk. This way, web sites will not be able to collect or store information about the computer system of a user. Lastly, a pop-up stopper is a program that stops pop-ups from appearing on computer screens when accessing some websites. There are different types of essential security software licenses that may be obtained. A freeware is an application that is without charge for personal use. This software is also called as donateware. Shareware, on the other hand, requires a payment for registration after a trial period. Trialware is software that has limited time trial versions. Users would have to pay for a registration code for every use. Lastly, commercial software can only be used for commercial purposes and payment for such would have to be made before it can be used.
