Understanding How Firewall Security Software Works
The advent of the Internet has made it possible for private home users to have access to a wide range of information. However, despite the benefits that can be gained from being Internet-connected, this poses a risk of having confidential or critical data accessed by unauthorized users. It is therefore, necessary for computer users to secure their data through appropriate security software or program. One of the most reliable and most widely used security programs is firewall security software. This type of software is capable of protecting both individual computers and corporate computer networks.
A firewall provides protection to computers which are part of a larger network from anything that is may corrupt data. It can either be a hardware device or firewall security software. It is compulsory that there should be at least two network interfaces for a firewall. The first one is for the network that it is supposed to protect and the other one is for the network to which it is exposed to. The firewall serves as a gateway between the two networks having different trust levels. In most cases, these two networks are comprised of a private computer network and a public network like the Internet. All incoming and outgoing traffic are regulated by the firewall.
Firewall security software protects private local area networks from software or programs that may be introduced to the system through the Internet. This also allows network administrators to provide Internet access to some users of a computer network. Aside from protecting confidential data, this also makes it possible for network administrators to control access of these sensitive data. Certain network privileges could be granted depending on the corporate position of the user.
The methodology of access denial should first be determined when installing or using firewall security software. Experts recommend that the default setup should deny all access. Next, the inbound access policy should be determined. The network administrator should determine the criteria for packets originating from the Internet to be allowed into the local area network. Network security is tighter if criteria are tighter. The outbound access policy should be determined next. To obtain security for certain users who access the web, a proxy server may be utilized. Next, determine if dial-in or dial-out access is needed. Though firewall security software provides information protection, it may not be enough to secure an entire computer network since it is not capable of ensuring the integrity, confidentiality and authentication of data that is behind the firewall. Moreover, there are also disadvantages for this security program. First, it limits access to certain Internet services. Passwords may be required before any service could be availed. Second, a firewall can also pose as a traffic bottleneck since security is concentrated in one spot. Problems that may arise from this include no Internet access or no security. Different firewall security software is sold online. Some can even be downloaded and installed in a matter of minutes. Features of different firewall security software should be evaluated to be able to choose the software most compatible to the needs of a specific computer user.
